Lobby Training-March 14th!
Just a reminder:
Next meeting and Lobby training
March 14th
Alcove D, 7 pm
(one week change due to a previously scheduled event)
Agenda:
I. Introductions
II. Introduction to restrictive bills & pro-choice bills
a. (anti-)TRAP: SB 2503 (in packet): would establish structural changes in medical offices to be completed in 30 days after the enactment of the bill. Was changed to only encompass abortion clinics. This would mean that abortion clinics would be shut down if they failed to comply with the new structural codes provided in the bill. There are only four abortion clinics in the state of Kansas, Lawrence being the farthest west, meaning that women from other states/western Kansas would not be able to obtain an abortion, endangering their lives. Wichita has one of three clinics in the nation that provides third-trimester abortions.

b. (pro-)HB 2803: (introduced by Planned Parenthood: would establish that accurate medical information was distributed concerning the proper usage and purpose of Emergency contraception.
Fiscal Note
c. (anti-) Kelsey Amendment: affects all women at Kansas universities. In accordance to Kansas law, residents are not to obtain state funding for abortions. This amendment annuls the previous abortion stipulations at Kansas universities (in cases of rape, incest, or life threatening health conditions). This would mean that even if a woman was raped or could die during pregnancy or birth, she would not be able to obtain an abortion with her university health insurance. Not only are university undergrads at risk, but teaching assistants and other state university employees would not be able to use this insurance.
d. SB 258: (recently enacted in South Dakota) imposes severe restrictions on abortions that violate the stipulations set forth in Roe v. Wade.
