Letter from Planned Parenthood of Kansas and Mid-Missouri

Today, we won the fight to protect sex education in Missouri!  In a crushing blow to Governor Blunt's legislative priorities, constituent pressure forced the Missouri legislature to table HB 1075, which would have gutted comprehensive medically accurate sex education programs in Missouri's public schools.

This is a victory you helped achieve!  In January, under pressure from anti-choice hardliners, the Governor made it clear that slashing access to information and prevention services was a TOP priority.  Planned Parenthood affiliates in Missouri were ready for the battle.  Supporters of sex education mobilized like never before – and YOU made the difference!

Unfortunately, the legislature did pass a bill allowing tax credits for disreputable crisis pregnancy centers (CPC's).  CPC supporters cleverly linked their bill to tax credits for much needed crisis child care and adoption services. 

Thank you for your tireless efforts – flooding the Capitol with tens of thousands of e-mails, phone calls, and lobby visits – up to the very last minute of session.  With the message – PUT PREVENTION FIRST – you refused to let legislators ban Planned Parenthood from public schools.  And you said

Urge the governor to protect medical privacy

Last week, the Kansas Legislature passed SB 528, a dangerous bill that would require the State to collect very sensitive information about women who terminate their pregnancies. 

SB 528 masquerades as a "public health" measure, but its real intent is to give Attorney General Phill Kline more information in medical records.

Unfortunately, this bill ignores research-based policies to reduce the numbers of abortions: abstinence-plus education and increased funding for family planning services.

Now it goes to the governor's desk.
